August is usually one of the hottest months of the year, making watering essential. Try to use water collected in water butts, and grey water wherever possible. Watering in the early mornings or evenings will prevent water loss through evaporation, meaning the plants get the very best hydration. Keep camellias and rhododendrons well-watered through late summer while their buds are forming.

Here are our top gardening tips for August.

Take the time to prune Wisteria and summer-flowering shrubs such as lavender, once they’ve finished flowering. Taking care not to prune as far as the old wood on lavenders. Deadhead dahlias and other flowering herbaceous to encourage a constant display of blooms.

Prune rambling roses removing up to a third of stems that have flowered. Tie the rest to supports.

You can now mow areas of wildflower meadow, as they have scattered their seeds.

Remove suckers (tiny stems at the base) from plants including roses, Laurels and at the base of trees.

Go on regular snail hunts, especially on damp evenings, to reduce populations.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Spring Flowering Bulbs becoming available in the garden centre during August. That way you can ensure you have the best choice of varieties available! And most importantly of all, enjoy your garden and all the hard work you’ve put in! Happy Summer!
