September brings a change in season as autumn approaches, the leaves start to turn golden, and the temperature starts to drop. But there is still plenty to keep you busy with gardening in September. Autumn is a fantastic time of year to plant your spring bulbs, feed your lawn and prepare the ground for frosts…
Planting Spring-Flowering Bulbs
Buy and plant spring-flowering bulbs – we’ve many offers in store, as well as a huge range! You can plant bulbs to stagger early, mid and late spring colour. Ensuring a fantastic display after Christmas and beyond. Here are some planting ideas…
Tend to the Roses
Now is a great time to deadhead all your roses. Also, if any rose leaves have developed black spot over the late summer, it’s worth taking time to remove all affected leaves – including those that have already dropped. This will stop spores overwintering and should help prevent infection of next year’s growth. Remember – do not put diseased leaves on your compost heap!
Prepare your Lawn for Winter
We’ve been fortunate this summer where it’s not been too dry – so many lawns have fared pretty well. However, all lawns will benefit greatly form a little maintenance – rake, aerate and apply an autumn fertiliser. If necessary, sow a new lawn from seed, or lay turf. Autumn is the perfect time to do this as the temperature cools, but the ground is still warm. Autumn is also the perfect time for planting hedges and trees – for this very reason.
Apply Bark (mulch) to Protect Plants
As the temperature drops it’s a good idea to protect border plants by applying bark – also known as ‘mulching’. For best results, apply when the soil is damp or wet, but make sure you weed first! It will help your soil from drying out, improve its texture and help protect tender roots from frost – a good 2-inch layer is best.
