Herbaceous Plants: vascular plants that have no persistent woody stems above ground.
There’s nothing more beautiful and rewarding than a dazzling display of summer flowering herbaceous plants. Whilst there are many to choose from, to give you some inspiration, herbaceous plants that are still readily available and will continue to flower all summer long include:
To have success with herbaceous plants, be sure to keep the younger plants well-watered. Established plants will still need watering, but their roots go deeper so they can withstand prolonged dry periods.
Staking may be needed for taller herbaceous plants – this keeps them from flopping or the flowers from being blown over and damaged. There are lots of options for plant support – many decorative options too. Be sure to use soft ties so not to damage the stems.
If the plants appear yellow or growth is poor, they will benefit from being fed with a liquid fertiliser – a good choice would be Miracle-Gro All-Purpose Water-Soluble Plant Food. This is a great all-rounder and can be used for many other plants too.
Keep the plants deadheaded when flowers are finished and fading. This will keep them tidy and encourage a new flush. Dying stems can also damage the crown and roots if battered about by strong winds, so they will also benefit from being cut back too.
That’s not to say that all herbaceous plants should be cut back. Many gardeners like to leave some plants intact (especially those with attractive seedheads). They give added interest in winter and provide vital food and shelter for wildlife. They can be cut back in spring when the new growth is appearing at the base.
There are so many choices when it come to herbaceous plants. They will enhance any space they’re planted in. So most importantly, have fun with them and enjoy their stunning displays…until they come back and do it all over again next year!
