Terrific Autumn and Winter Bedding Plants

The weather has been a bit unpredictable so you might not be spending as much time sitting outside as you would like to at the moment, but this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your garden, even if it is through a window.

It’s that time of year when the days start to shorten and perennials begin to fade, but there are still plenty of autumn-flowering bulbs that are willing to shine, adding colour and interest into gaps in borders, pots and hanging baskets.

Keep an eye on your summer pots and baskets and once they are past their best, remove the old bedding plants and compost them. Replace the compost in your tubs and baskets and then you are ready to plant some bedding plants for some pretty autumn and winter colour.

Here are some great autumn/winter flowering bedding plants that don’t mind the cold, rain, and dare we say it – snow:

Pansies

Pansies are our go-to favourite – we love them! They always look lovely and are very hardy. They’re so very versatile and will flower longer than other bedding plants. With lots of colour combos to choose from, go crazy with your colour scheme! They do like a sunny location and if you want them to keep flowering, deadhead them often.

Violas

Violas are another pretty and easy-to-grow bedding plant. They look like pansies, but their flower heads are slightly smaller. Trailing varieties work well in hanging baskets, especially when interspersed with ivy.

Cyclamens

Cyclamens will fill your borders with colour, even when it’s miserable outside. The flowers are pretty, and the leaves are attractively mottled, so they are a great choice for window boxes and containers.

Heathers

Heathers make excellent bedding plants over winter. For more subtle colour, plant some between brighter bedding plants such as pansies and cyclamens.

Chrysanthemums

Late flowering Autumn Chrysanthemums are perfect for autumn colour. They don’t mind our British weather and will cheer you up well into winter.

Primroses

Primroses are happy in winter, as they are very hardy. For a splash of colour, add them to your pots, containers, and window boxes. They begin flowering from mid-winter, so mix and match with autumn bedding plants – perfect for your bulb lasagne!

Polyanthus

Polyanthus is a hybrid between primulas and wild primrose. It blooms in compact clusters of long-lasting flowers. There are plenty of colours to choose from reds, pinks, yellows, whites, and purples, or why not mix it up a bit and mix two or three colours together? While polyanthus can handle some shade, it grows best in sunny areas.

Christmas Roses

An early-blooming hellebore, the Christmas rose puts out large, white flowers from November to March, with beautiful deep green leaves. Did you know…the number of flowers you get on each plant will depend on how much sun it gets? so try to place it in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind.

For striking results, group several bedding plants together, combining colours and textures. Place tall plants in the background and shorter ones in the foreground, contrasting or complementing colours.
